What Is Stump Grinding?
Once a tree is cut down, the stump stays behind. It looks untidy, gets in the way of the lawnmower and can attract pests.
Stump grinding uses a machine with a spinning cutting wheel that chips the stump away, down to below ground level. What is left is a pile of wood chips and flat ground, with no need to dig the whole stump out.

Good to Know
What Happens to the Roots?
Grinding removes the stump and the top of the main roots. The rest stays in the ground and slowly breaks down on its own, which is fine for lawns, flowerbeds and planting.
Before
The stump sits above ground with roots spreading below.
After Grinding
Stump gone, flat ground with wood chips. Roots remain deeper down.
Over Time
Grass or planting covers the spot while the roots rot away naturally.
Your Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does stump removal take?
It depends on the size of the stump and the type of wood. A small to medium stump is quick, while large or very hard stumps take longer. We give you a realistic idea when we quote.
Do I need to be home?
Not always. As long as we can reach the stump and have agreed the details with you, we can work while you are out.
Will it damage my garden?
Grinding is far less disruptive than digging a stump out. You will have some wood chips and a small patch of disturbed soil, which we tidy up.
Can I plant grass or a new tree afterwards?
Yes. Once the chips are removed and the hole topped up with soil, you can lay turf or plant. We are happy to advise on replanting in the same spot.
What if the stump is in a tight spot?
We have equipment suited to different access situations. Tell us about the space when you call and we will confirm what will work.
Do you remove stumps from trees you did not fell?
Yes. We remove stumps no matter who cut the tree down.
